A surge in passengers waiting to board trains for Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh is currently in progress, on platforms 12 and 14 of the station preceded the stampede.
A high-level committee was established to look into the stampede at the New Delhi railway station.
Twenty hours after the rush, the Railways confirmed that the catastrophe had definitely happened. Several official spokespersons issued contradictory statements on Saturday, one of whom denied the incident had taken place.
